Upcoming Issue 5.1
5.1 issue is almost out! Graphics and articles have recently been completed and currently, we are going through the process of issue design. According to schedule, 5.1 issue should be released around early November. There are definitely a few terrific articles to look forward to in this JOURNYS issue. It features an interview with a local scientist, Dr. Shu Chien, who recently was placed with the prestigious National Medal of Science in 2011 by President Obama.

Volunteer Opportunity!
The Alzheimer’s Association is having their annual walk to end Alzheimer’s in the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for its cause. JOURNYS invites all chapters to participate or volunteer at the walk with family and friends to help fight against this mental disease! There is no fee to register. At the event, you can learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and the support programs and services offered by your local chapter. You will also have opportunities to get involved with the cause through advocacy initiatives and clinical trial enrollment.

JOURNYS at DoSomething Boot Camp
On August 18th, 5 JOURNYS chapters gathered in LA for the DoSomething.org Boot Camp, a day-long event that trains young social entrepreneurs (like us!) nationwide. Here, JOURNYS received many valuable tips--from managing corporate sponsors and funding, to galvanizing all students and the greater community. We also had the opportunity to network JOURNYS with non-profit and corporate professionals, all of whom offered great praise, advice, and enthusiasm. Several fellow boot campers expressed interest in starting a chapter of JOURNYS themselves!
Summer JOURNYS Interschool Activities
The JOURNYS presidents and editing heads met in August to plan for 2012-2013:
1. To increase JOURNYS cohesiveness, interschool meetings will be held monthly to share developments and brainstorm initiatives.
2. The 4 most active chapters from 2011-2012 formed the interschool leadership committee, which met in July. Each committee member has journal-wide duties: Angela Wang (Outreach), Kenneth Xu (Treasurer), Michelle Banayan (Publicity), and Angela Zou (Chair). Apoorva Mylavarapu was appointed Editor in Chief and will join the committee.
